The History of Facility Management

The 1970s

Most experts agree that the evolution of the facility management industry began as a result of the move toward using cubicles and the use of computers by businesses in the 1970s. At the time there was no official association focused on providing information on how to manage the office environment. Enter the Herman Miller Research Corporation in 1978, that hosted a conference named “Facility Influence on  Productivity” in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Three attendees; Charles Hitch of Manufacturer’s Bank in Detroit, George Graves of Texas Eastern Transmission Corp. and David Armstrong of Michigan State University would go on to establish the International Facility Management Association.

The 1980s

In 1980, Graves held a meeting in hopes of establishing a formal organizational foundation for a facility management association. He and his associates quickly created a constitution, bylaws, provisional officers and planned to expand the society nationally. At the second annual national conference in 1981, the name of the organization was changed to the International Facility Management Association, which remains the name today.

The Present

Over the last several decade’s facility management services began to incorporate duties that facility management teams today still perform. With advancements in technology, these tasks have resulted in more efficient and cost-effective processes.
